A 12 step guideline to easily master a new language

How to master a new language?

Have you ever started learning a new language and felt that it is something of a nightmare to get into it?

In an article published by Oxford University in the March of 2020, Professor Katrin Kohl of Oxford University has proposed a simple 12 step guideline on how to approach language learning so as to not be stuck in a rabbit hole and not able to find out a way to learn the language you desire.

Following these guidelines, you will be able to not only grasp the language but also master it.

1. Don’t set the bar too high, Set a modest minimum of 20minutes per day, and do more if you’re feeling energetic

2.Vocabulary learning can be fun with a helpful app, and you can measure your progress

3.Practice pronunciation – find how a word is pronounced online by typing in the word and ‘pronounce’

4.Read a novel in the language with a strong plot, e.g. a Georges Simenon thriller if you’re learning French, and refer to a translation. Or read a translated Agatha Christie and refer to the English original (Set yourself very short sections, to begin with). There again, La Peste by Albert Camus is currently proving very popular.

5.Watch kids’ stuff on YouTube

6.Watch a non-serious film with subtitles, then watch it without, in very short sections.

7.Follow news stories – e.g. developments with the Coronavirus crisis. Compare the reporting.

8.Research information about a hobby in a country where the language is spoken. Find a blog that’s relevant.

9.What place might you go to where the language is spoken? Explore local websites to find out what there is to see and do using local websites, and involve Google Translate to help you along.

10.Try your hand at translating a very simple text, with a dictionary and Google Translate·

12.Find a language learning buddy. It’s much easier to learn a language and keep it going if you’re doing it with someone else or in a class.

Following these steps, you will be able to approach learning a new language in a better, more guided, and precise manner.
